Making Bets in Bank (Casino) Craps

In Bank Craps, players bet on the outcome of each roll by having the dealer place bets for them on the Craps layout, which is on the table itself.

The image below shows the standard betting layout for the Bank Craps game:

Making Bets in Bank (Casino) Craps

You may bet with the shooter or against them, or make any of the many other bets available.

Pass Line

The Pass bet is the most commonly used bet on the table, with a house edge of just 1.414%. These bets should be placed in the space marked Pass Line on the craps table, and cannot be removed or reduced. You may not place a bet on the Pass Line once a 'point' is established.

If you place your chips on the Pass Line betting space before the come out roll, and the shooter rolls a 7 or 11, you win. If 2, 3 or 12 is rolled, then you lose.

If any other number (4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10) is rolled, this becomes the 'point' and you will win if the point is repeated before a 7 is rolled. However, Pass Line bets lose if 7 is rolled before the point is made.

If you win, your bet is paid at even-money.

Come Line

Come Line bets are identical to Pass Line bets, except they are made any time AFTER the point is established. Come Line bets cannot be removed or reduced, and like Pass bets have a house edge of just 1.414%. Wins are paid at even money.

If you place your bet on the Come Line, you will win on 7 or 11, and lose on 2, 3 or 12 on the roll immediately following the placement of your bet. Any other number that comes up is your point and your bet will be placed on that number. You will therefore win if your point is thrown again, and you will lose if a 7 is rolled.

Don't Pass Line

This is the opposite of betting on the Pass Line, that is, you are betting AGAINST the shooter. This has a house edge of 1.402%. Wins are paid at even money.

Place these bets in the space marked Don't Pass on the craps table. They may be removed or reduced at any time, but may not be replaced or increased until a decision on the point has occurred. You may not place a bet on the Don't Pass Line once a point is established.

If the shooter rolls a 2 or a 3 on the come-out roll, you win. If they roll a 12 there is a stand off (bets returned), and if they roll a 7 or 11, you lose.

When a point is established, you win if 7 is rolled before the point is made, and lose if the point is made before a 7 is rolled.

If you have a look at the table layout, you will see that the Don't Pass bet bars 6-6, as this would give the player the edge (rather than the house). If the shooter throws a double 6, the Don't Pass bet neither wins or loses, and the player who made the bet may withdraw it or leave it to be decided by subsequent throws.

You may find that some greedy casinos (such as those on cruise ships) may bar 1-2, which triples the house edge to 4.4%.

Don't Come Line

This is the opposite of betting on the Come Line, again with a house edge of 1.402%. Wins are paid at even money. At your request, the dealer can remove or reduce your Don't Come bet, but it may not be replaced or increased without being re-bet on the Don't Come Line.

You may place your bets on the Don't Come Line anytime after the point is established. If the shooter rolls a 2 or a 3 on the roll immediately following the placement of your bet, you win. If they roll a 12 there is a stand off (bets returned), and if they roll a 7 or 11, you lose.

Any other number becomes your point, and your bet will be placed on that number. You will win if 7 is rolled before your point, and you will lose if your point is repeated before a 7 rolls.

As with Don't Pass bets, Don't Come bets bar 6-6, and if the shooter throws a double 6, the bet neither wins or loses, and the player may withdraw it or leave it to be decided by subsequent throws.

When making a throw, the dice should not hit anyone's hand. The crew and other players will often shout "Watch your hands!" when the shooter is about to throw. It is thought that the roll will be jinxed if it comes into contact with anything.

Hardway

Hardway bets are located in the middle of the craps table and are placed by the dealer. They may be bet at any time. A 'hardway' is a way of rolling an even number where both dice are the same.

The four possible Hardway bets are Hard Six (two 3's) and Hard Eight (two 4's), which pay 19 to 2; Hard Four (two 2's) and Hard Ten (two 5's), which pay 15 to 2. Hard Six or Eight have a house edge of 4.55%, whilst Hard Four and Ten have a house edge of 5.56%.

You win if your Hardway rolls before a 7, and you lose if a 7 is rolled first or if the number rolls with a non-pair combination. For example, a Hard Six bet would win on a roll of 3 and 3, but would lose as soon as a 7 or an Easy Six is thrown (1-5, 2-4).

Place Bets to Win

These are bets which can be made at any time on the shooter rolling a specific number of the point number group - 4, 5, Six, 8, Nine, 10. The wager on each placed number wins if the number rolls before a 7 and loses if 7 rolls first. The Place Bet is similar to a Buy Bet (see below), but at different odds. However, no commission is charged.

These bets may be increased, decreased, taken back or called off at anytime. They will lose when the shooter Sevens Out but keep 'On' until that time, which means that they could pay out several times before losing.

Taking and Laying Odds

A player may make a separate bet on the point number in addition to their original bet (flat bet) anytime after the point is established. This bet is placed behind the Pass Line or Come Line and next to your original bet. The odds bet wins if the flat bet wins and loses if the flat bet loses. Odds pay-offs are equal to the true odds of winning or losing the bet (no house edge).

As there is no house edge, this is the best bet on offer in a casino, however, it is not advertised and many experienced players do not play it.

Field Bet

The layout has a large area marked out for these bets, which have a house edge of 5.5%. Money is bet on the next roll only. If 3, 4, 9, 10 or 11 rolls, you win even money. If 2 or 12 rolls, you win 2 to 1. If any other number rolls, you lose.

Buy and Lay Bets

These bets pay true dice odds without requiring a flat bet (as in taking and laying odds). The bets may be made directly on 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 at any time. A Buy Bet is a wager that the number will roll before a 7. A commission of 5% is charged.

One Roll Bets

There are a number of bets which can be made on any roll of the dice. These bets are handed to the Dealer to be placed in the appropriate part of the craps table. Winning bets are automatically placed again for the next roll unless specifically called off by the player.

If 7 rolls you win and are paid 4 to 1. All other numbers lose. The house edge is 16.9%.

Any Craps

If 2, 3 or 12 rolls you win and are paid 7 to 1. All other numbers lose. The house edge is 11.1%.

Two Craps or Aces

If 2 is rolled, you win and are paid 33 to 1 (US tables will pay at 30-1). All other numbers lose.

Twelve Craps or Two Sixes

If 12 is rolled, you win and are paid 33 to 1 (US tables will pay at 30-1). All other numbers lose.

Three Craps or Ace-Deuce

If 3 rolls you win and are paid 15 to 1. All other numbers lose. The house edge is 11.1%.

Eleven or Six-Five

If 11 rolls you win and are paid 15 to 1. All other numbers lose. The house edge is 11.1%.

Horn Bet

This is a four-unit bet (or multiple thereof), where you bet one-quarter of your wager on 2, 3, 11, and 12.

  • If 3 or 11 rolls you win and are paid 3.75 to 1.
  • If 2 or 12 rolls you win and are paid 7.5 to 1.
  • If a number other than 2, 3, 11, or 12 rolls, you lose.

If the dice leave the table it is thought that the next roll will be unlucky, as the shooters 'rhythm' will have been broken. Players may shout "Same Dice!", as it is thought that the bad luck may be avoided if the dice are not changed.
