The Basics of Poker Betting
Poker is one of the great gambling games, and it's not enough to know how to play the cards, it's essential that you also know how to bet.
At the beginning of each hand, each player will put in a small amount of money, known as the ante, into the middle of the table. These bets make up the initial pot, which will go to the winner of the hand.
Players may make additional bets, increasing the value of the pot, which the other players must match in order to continue playing. This is known as seeing or calling the bet. Instead of seeing the bet, players may raise it (increase the bet amount) or if they know they have no chance of winning, they may drop out of the hand (fold). When a player folds, they forfeit the money that they have added to the pot, and if all players fold except for one, then that player automatically wins.
There are many different betting rules for poker, depending on the variant of the game. Most will be 'limit' games, and have a maximum amount that players may bet or raise, and a maximum number of raises allowed per round of betting. 'No limit' games are limited only by the amount of money that the players have brought to the table.
Your aim in poker is not necessarily to get the best hand, but to win as much money and lose as little as possible on each hand. The best poker players play few hands and maximise their return when the odds are in their favour.
