Placing Outside Bets
Here we concentrate on outside betting: those bets covering groups of 12 or 18 numbers. As their names suggests, outside bets are located around the outside of the inside betting area. Zero is not covered by any outside bet, and if it comes up, any of these bets are halved and returned to the player.
Betting Layout
The image below shows the betting layout for roulette:
Key
F: Column Bets (12 Numbers)
Placing a chip in one of the boxes marked "2 to 1" at the end of the columns covers all the numbers in that column, a total of twelve. A winning Column bet pays 2 to 1.
G: Dozen Bet (12 Numbers)
Placing a chip in one of the three boxes marked '1st 12,' '2nd 12,' or '3rd 12' covers those twelve numbers. The first dozen is 1 to 12, the second dozen is 13 to 24, and the third dozen is 25 to 36. This bet pays 2 to 1.
H: Colour Bet (18 Numbers)
A colour bet is placed by putting your chips in the area with the words RED or BLACK (sometimes marked by red and black diamonds). This covers all the black or red numbers on the field. This is a very common roulette bet and you win if the ball lands on the colour of your choice. The bet pays even money.
I: Even or Odd (18 Numbers)
Place your chip either on the 'odd' or the 'even' field, to predict the ball landing on an odd or even number. The bet pays even money.
J: Low or High (18 Numbers)
This bet divides the field of numbers into two groups. The numbers from 1 to 18 are designated low, and the ones from 19 to 36 are high. You bet on whether the next number that comes up is between 1 and 18 or 19 and 36. The bet pays even money.
